People ask me questions on Bitcoin mining on a regular basis. I’m happy to talk on the phone, help out on forums and slack channels, answer questions on youtube videos, and answer comments on this blog.

More info on cooling with lots of generated heat. Right now all I do is get it out, the more airflow the better. I don’t want any of the generated heat recirculating back to the inlet of the miners.

Hi Rolf, I have a question about one or three phase electricity. Does it make a difference in terms of PDU or wiring in general for your mining operation – for example, do you need special PDUs or plugs or will existing appliances work – from kettle to desktop PC.

Zij, great question – that took a little bit of learning. At my small space which you can see in this more extensive tour, I have 240 VAC single phase 200 amp service. It is small commercial service. Easy to use, all single phase.

When I worked with the electric company to plan the electrical service for the medium size location, there was no option of bringing in single phase. For larger service, it is brought in as 3 phase, because the overall amps are less, and the wire can be small gauge.
We chose to power the cooling fans with three phase power, because it is great for rotating machinery. For everything else, it needed to be broken out into single phase power. So each of the 400 amp panels has 3 phases going to it, but each 208VAC 30 amp connection coming out of the 400 amp panel is single phase.
It gets a little tricky because for best efficiency the current draw on each of the single phase connections should balance. Here is a nice writeup on how 208 VAC 3 phase power into a panel can be broken out into 120VAC or 208VAC single phase by different ways of connecting the breakers to the busses. http://www.oempanels.com/208v-single-phase-and-208v-3-phase
Short answer, 3 phase to the building, single phase to the PDU’s.
